Gomoku: learn through an example

Open Gomoku, check the instructions and begin a round. Make five or more connected stones horizontally, vertically or diagonally. A full board without a line is a draw. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Treat the first round as a chance to learn the controls. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Try a more deliberate round

When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round. Keep the objective visible.

Understand the aim

Make five or more connected stones horizontally, vertically or diagonally. A full board without a line is a draw. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

How to proceed

  1. Player 1 places the first stone on an empty intersection.
  2. Player 2 places a stone and turns alternate.
  3. Look for open lines and block your opponent’s threats.
  4. A winning line immediately ends the round.

Input guidance

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Check any mode label before starting.

Follow the example

Four consecutive stones with an empty point at both ends creates two possible finishing moves. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Choose a deliberate next step.

A useful caution

This is freestyle Gomoku, not Renju: there are no special forbidden opening or double-three rules. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use.
